Founded in 1978, the Ontario Black History Society (OBHS) is a pioneering organization in Canada dedicated to the study and promotion of Black history and heritage. Based in Toronto, this non-profit plays a crucial role in celebrating the contributions of Black Canadians and advocating for their recognition in society.

OBHS is not only the first major public organization focused on Black history in Canada, but it is also recognized by the Ministry of Culture as an Ontario Provincial Heritage Organization. The Society initiated the formal celebration of Black History Month in Canada and has significantly contributed to its recognition at various governmental levels since 1979. Through events, exhibitions, and educational initiatives, OBHS continues to inspire and inform the community about the rich history of Black Canadians.
